Driver’s abilities: Drivers should drive according to their abilities. Stay focused and alert and ensure you are not tired.  Driving is primarily a thinking task, and you have a lot of things to think about when you’re behind the wheel. Don’t multi-task and get distracted. Being alert allows you to react quickly to potential problems — like when the driver in the car ahead slams on the brakes at the last minute.  Being tired or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol affects reaction times and judgement, so rest up before a long trip and take regular breaks during your journey.

Road and weather conditions: Be aware of the road and weather conditions and drive to those conditions. Understand how to drive on different surfaces, for example, unsealed roads, sandy or dusty roads. Know how to drive in the wind, rain, snow or in the glaring sun or when there is poor visibility. Use your lights appropriately and as soon as dusk descends make sure your headlights are on. Listen to or read the weather report before you set out on your journey and check for road hazards, closures or heavy traffic; you may have to re-plan your route.  Do not take chances in risky situations on the roads, it can cost you your safety, and ultimately your life.

Knowledge of the road rules: Defensive driving is predominantly based on understanding the rules of the road. Be aware of road markings, rights of way, road signs and load restrictions. Ensure you understand how to proceed at intersections, roundabouts and T junctions or where there are road works. Keep to the speed limits and pay attention to what other drivers are doing.

However, if you identify uneven wear, imbalance or misalignment on one or more of the tyres before the recommended kilometerage, ensure you undertake a tyre rotation as soon as possible.

Chris Lett adds a few other tips to ensure you are ready for that holiday trip. “Don’t overload the car, check the load capacity of your vehicle. Understanding the vehicle’s maximum load capacity is important. It is fun to pack everything desired to make the holidays a memorable experience, but keep in mind that for every 90kg of additional weight, fuel economy can be reduced by 0.42 km per litre. This can drastically affect the life span of the vehicle’s tyres. Pack only what is needed, and anything excessive will have to be left at home,” says Lett.

Lastly, never drive while tired, and take regular rest breaks on long journeys,” says Lett.  “Keep a bottle of water and a couple of snacks handy to ensure you are not dehydrated or hungry while driving. There are lots of roadside rest areas in all Australian states, and often free refreshments are offered, especially in the holiday season,” adds Lett.

Upgrading the brake kit: Large brake kits are both the fastest and best ways to improve the braking performance. “The heat takes slightly longer to accumulate on larger disc surfaces, at the same time helping them cool down much faster,” says Lett. “Through cross-drilled and well-ventilated discs, the cooling down process is more effective,” adds Lett.

Keeping the brakes cool: Should new brake pads overheat, this can alter the underlying structure of the brake pad material. “Until brakes are fully bedded down, vehicle owners should prevent heavy braking that could lead to potential overheating. This can include any circumstances, from towing heavy loads, to stopping immediately after high speeds,” says Lett.

Braking properly and often: More braking is better than less, and braking gently is better than heavy braking overall. “For the first 300km, each time the brake pads establish contact with the discs, it increases the contact area surface between the two parts, allowing better braking in the future. Therefore, braking more often and lightly is recommended for the first 300km, after the new pads have been fitted,” says Lett. “Driving slower provides vehicle owners with an opportunity to brake lightly. Braking faster and harder wears out the brakes more quickly. Another precautionary measure is to keep an ideal distance between vehicles, which will also provide you with quicker reaction time, and prevent the unnecessary slamming of the brakes,” adds Lett.

Torque is basically the unit of measurement for the twisting force that’s applied to a wheel nut. Wheel nuts are torqued for each wheel by mechanics to ensure that they meet the vehicle manufacturer’s standards when fitting the wheel for the first time. However, a second check-up is also necessary.

Chris Lett, Australian tyre recycler and owner of Branigans Tyres gives vehicle owners a lesson on retourquing wheel nuts.

When new, or substituted wheels are fitted for the first time, the individual responsible must torque all wheel nuts according to the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications as seen in the vehicle owner’s handbook and vehicle documentation. “After 50 kilometres of driving on the new tyres, wheel nuts must be checked once again, and if needed, be retourqued to restore initial value,” says Lett.

Each vehicle make will be subjected to different amounts of torque to tighten up the wheel nuts, as well as to avoid causing any damage in the process.

“In terms of the correct order for wheel nut torquing, loosening or tightening wheel nuts properly, requires a particular tool known as a tool wrench,” says Lett. “The vehicle owner, or mechanic will start by setting the torque wrench to half of the expected torque, tightening each nut according to that setting,” Lett adds.

The setting is then adjusted on the wrench to tighten all the wheel nuts to the correct torque. Wheel nuts are tightened in a particular sequence to allow thorough torque. The proper order for any wheel with five or ten nuts is a star-shaped pattern. A wheel with four wheel nuts, on the other hand, is tightened in the shape of a cross.

Should wheel nuts be placed too tightly, they can cause intense issues such as wheel stud stretching, as well as fastener threads being stripped. Brake drums can also become warped, along with the wheel hubs. If wheel nuts are placed loosely, they can lead to wheels potentially coming off while driving. Therefore, it is important to find the right balance when torquing the wheel nuts.

Dirt, sand and rust between the threads of a nut can create false torques during the first fitting, where the force applied, outdoes the friction, but does not result in a clamping force. It is important to take note of this and keep a close eye on all wheel nuts to ensure they’re well maintained and solidly torqued.

Wheel nuts sustain strains and stresses during daily road use, so regular wheel nut retourquing should be conducted to ensure the strength, quality and safety standards are reaffirmed. Wheel nut retourquing is a priority that must be attended to every year.

The Australian weather can take an extreme toll on both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. Now that Spring has arrived, it’s time to get those tyres scrubbed and rims shined, interiors deep cleaned and vacuumed, and that exterior washed and waxed. It’s time for some serious spring-cleaning.

Australian tyre recycler and owner of Branigans Tyres, Chris Lett provides some expert spring-cleaning advice to spring into full vehicle-vibrancy.

“There are five important steps to spring-cleaning: undercarriage washing, exterior washing and waxing, tyre cleaning, replacing wiper blades, and interior cleanup,” says Lett.

Undercarriage washing: “The initial step to preparing one’s vehicle for the freshness and radiance of spring is to remove road salt and grime from the vehicle’s undercarriage. Using either a high-pressured or garden hose, try and reach every nook and cranny of the underneath with water,” says Lett.  Should one utilise a high-pressured hose, use diluted detergent and mix with water to wash the undercarriage thoroughly.

Exterior washing and waxing: Start with an initial hose down to weaken the dirt before the actual and thorough wash. Select the most effective car wash liquid, mix with water and wash with a soft sponge. “Avoid any abrasive materials like steel wool when cleaning the outer body of the vehicle. Once the vehicle is soapy and touch stains are neutralised, hose the vehicle down, and wipe the vehicle dry with a chamois cloth,” says Lett.

It’s time to start waxing. Get the ideal waxing product out and apply with a micro fibre cloth. Remember to apply wax in circular motions to get full surface coverage. Allow to dry. After that, polish the vehicle with a good waxing machine.

Tyre cleaning: Hose down tyres to weaken any soft dirt. Then apply a tyre and wheel cleaner to the outer surface and then brush with strength using a tyre brush. “One can also use an unused paintbrush to remove any debris. Rinse tyres with water, then dry with a micro fibre cloth,” says Lett.

Replacing wiper blades: “Remove any cracked wiper blades. If one notices that blades are skipping and streaking, it’s time to replace the wiper blades,” says Lett. Before refitting the new blades, use a standard window cleaning solution and thoroughly clean the front and rear windows to remove built up dirt and grime.

Interior Cleanup: Get vacuuming and remove all the fine dirt in the nooks and crannies in and around the seats and on the floor. “Vacuum car seats thoroughly, or use a wet vacuum on the car seats for better results. Based on the material of your interior, utilise the correct products to wipe down arm rests, headrests, dashboards and side areas of the interior,” says Lett. The same applies to the boot, wet or dry vacuum it and lay a plastic tarpaulin across the floor of the boot to keep it as clean as possible. For an extra boost to a clean and fresh interior, place a scented air freshener on the rear view mirror.

“Vehicle efficiency is measured holistically and takes into account the vehicle’s design and performance, and how that directly influences it’s on-road capabilities,” says Lett. “More notably, driving behaviour also impacts fuel consumption, which ultimately leads to greater efficiency. Smooth acceleration and deceleration, gear-changing at higher speeds, idle reduction and removing clunky accessories that weigh down the vehicle support improved efficiency,” Lett adds.

Idle reduction is important as it heavily influences vehicle and fuel efficiency. “The longer a vehicle is left to idle, the more fuel is wasted, additionally posing a health risk to people, both in and around the vehicle. Idling also reduces a vehicle’s fuel economy, costing the owner money to recuperate that lost fuel. Luckily, diesel engines are mostly calibrated to optimum performance at travelling speeds, combusting fuel less efficiently when idling,” says Lett.

There are many vehicle and fuel efficiency techniques that promote vehicle efficiency. “The most notable techniques are: an integrated starter/generator, variable valve timing and lift, continuous variable transmission, and direct fuel injection,” says Lett.

An Integrated starter/generator allows engines to shut down and immediately restart for short stops (e.g. at a red traffic light), rather that idling at the light. Variable timing and lift enables the intake and exhaust valves to react according to the engine speed, which supports improved fuel economy and emissions. Continuous variable transmission limits the revolutions per minute (rpm) for any speed, reducing vehicle fuel consumption. Direct fuel injection is when fuel is injected directly into the cylinder barrel, allowing more efficient combustion than when fuel and air are mixed outside of the cylinder.

Accompanying these, are a few aerodynamic and weight reduction techniques that support improved efficiency. Lighter materials like carbon fibres and lighter metals allow manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight and promote engine efficiency. Vortex generators are small, triangular shaped roof mounted devices in front of the rear window.  Properly shaped, sized and positioned vortex generators reduce drag by causing air flow along the rear windshield and boot lid. Lastly, and very importantly are wheels. “Thinner, smaller wheels and low rolling resistant tyres reduce road friction and air drag, thus increasing fuel efficiency. Concave rims that are fully closed are much more dynamic than open rims,” says Lett.

Chris Lett, owner of Branigans Tyres, and trusted Australian automotive specialist, highlights the important advantages of biodiesel (biofuel) and how it benefits both vehicles and the environment. Manufactured from vegetable oils, recycled restaurant grease and animal fats, biodiesel is becoming an important alternative option for vehicles. Biodiesel meets both the biomass-based diesel and overall advanced biofuel requirement of the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Australia’s energy transformation specialists, Bioenergy Australia, estimate that biodiesel potentially could cut emissions by over 85% as opposed to diesel, while bioethanol could reduce emissions to around 50%.

In terms of vehicle benefits, biodiesels are primarily advantageous due to their environmentally-friendly qualities. Less carbon emissions with a high percentage of biodiesel in blended fuels act as another major benefit as well. Some diesel vehicle owners might consider using a biodiesel product such as cooking oil as an alternative solution. However, this could cause significant damage to many cars if owners do not understand their vehicle. “Motorists interested in utilising biodiesels must do research into the compatibility of their vehicle with certain biodiesels, and contact the manufacturer to avoid serious types of damage,” says Lett.

It is true that fuel-efficient driving can save one a great deal of money. Preventing wear and tear on one’s vehicle, improving road safety and, ultimately, curbing carbon dioxide emissions through lowering a vehicle’s fuel consumption, all support greater fuel efficiency.

“Planning ahead helps; listen to traffic reports and avoid accidents, and other trouble spots. Mapping out one’s road journey before starting out is wise,” says Lett. “It is also important that road-users adopt the following fuel-efficient techniques and tips,” Lett adds.

Maintain a steady speed: When one’s speed begins to dip and burst inconsistently, more fuel is consumed. As a result, drivers end up filling their cars more often, which becomes costly. Where it is permitted, consider using cruise control for highway driving. Note, however, that the small variations in speed can be good when gravity assists. Also, if possible, decrease the speed when travelling uphill, as the motor will regain momentum as it rolls downhill. Fluctuating one’s speed between 75 and 85 km per hour every 18 seconds can increase fuel consumption by 20%, therefore, consistent speed regularly practiced on the roads will reduce this.

Avoid high-speeds: “Don’t crawl, and also, don’t rush,” says Lett. “Essentially, obey the speed limits and fuel-saving is one step closer,” Lett adds. Excessive speeding uses more fuel, as well as driving slowly using the highest gear. Maintaining a balance can be achieved if one adheres to the speed limit and uses the appropriate gear.

Monitor air-conditioner usage: A startling fact is that using the air-conditioner can increase one’s fuel consumption by 20%. When driving in the city, open the windows. If one does use the air-conditioner, utilise the re-circulate option to minimise the usage.

Accelerate gently: Take about five seconds to accelerate the vehicle up to 20km per hour from a stop. This will assist in fuel-efficiency. Never accelerate hard as that will lead to incurring unwanted costs for fuel.

Track fuel consumption: Evaluate how long one’s vehicle can go without filling the tank, be it a few weeks, maybe a month. Commit to the challenge of refilling only when the tank is close to empty as this may assist in reducing weekly or monthly fuel costs.

Avoid unnecessary idling: Turn off the engine, if the vehicle has stopped for more than a minute, unless one is in traffic,” says Lett.

“Following these steps will show results on both fuel consumption and the pocket,” says Lett. “Vehicle owners should be savvy in terms of fuel management,” adds Lett.

Both petrol and diesel vehicles have internal combustion engines that operate using a two or four-stroke cycle. In addition, the power cycle comprises of four phases: intake, compression, power and exhaust. Though this similarity is apparent, diesel and petrol engines are quite different and each possess advantages and disadvantages.

Owner of Branigans Tyres, and Australian tyre recycler, Chris Lett, unpacks the differences between petrol and diesel engines, and potentially settles the debate about which is the superior engine in a non-competitive manner.

“The main difference between diesel and petrol engines is that a petrol engine has spark plugs, while a diesel engine depends on heavily compressed air,” says Lett. Petrol engines have a compression ratio much lower to that of a diesel engine, as petrol engines use spark plug ignition to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Diesel engines work by compressing only air at such a heavy rate, reaching about 14-23 times its original volume, thus rising the temperature to ignite the diesel fuel.

Lett discusses the advantages of petrol engines. “Petrol vehicles cost much less as opposed to their diesel counterparts, mainly because petrol fuel types are manufactured at lower costs,” says Lett. “Additionally, petrol engines are highly responsive and powerful compared to diesel engines. Petrol engines also run much smoother than diesel engines,” adds Lett. A major disadvantage of petrol engines, however, is that they require more maintenance as they tend to clog up faster. If left unmanaged, petrol engines can deteriorate faster than diesel engines.

“Known as the efficient counterpart to petrol engines, vehicles fitted with diesel engines attain greater mileage, meaning more travel time and less time refuelling. Diesel engines are built to solidly withstand high compressions of gasses with their cylinders, lasting much longer than petrol engines, and requiring less maintenance,” says Lett. Diesel engines are versatile as they can be adjusted to run on alternative and renewable fuels like Bio-diesel. Bio-diesel is used vegetable oil, recycled and intended to potentially power diesel vehicles.

A major disadvantage of the diesel engine is that it produces a particular knocking sound known as diesel clatter, a result of the spontaneous ignition of fuel, causing a pressure wave which makes the engine sound noisier. Another disadvantage is that diesel engines are heavier and not as easy as petrol vehicles to rev, thus making them an undesirable choice for sports cars. More notably, diesel engines are required to be built stronger to hold up against high gas compression, and as such become costly to manufacture, making diesel vehicles more expensive than petrol vehicles.

“All in all, both diesel and petrol engine vehicles present their own uniqueness and capabilities, while carrying the unwanted burdens of imperfection,” says Lett. Conclusively, whether a vehicle owner has a petrol or diesel engine under the bonnet, what matters is how it is maintained, and its operational capabilities.

During an air-conditioning regassing, the following is performed: drive belts and pulleys, operation valves, thermostats, and hoses are inspected and system lines and components are tested for any leaks with an electric leak detector. The air conditioning system is evacuated and the refrigerant is recovered, with new refrigerant oil added to the system. The condenser temperature is inspected, and a suction-line temperature reading is taken. Lastly, while the vehicle is running, the air vent temperature is checked.

It is important to undertake some research and choose qualified and certified auto electricians who specialise in air conditioning regassing. Lett provides the following advice, “Refrain from undertaking cheap air conditioning regassing, particularly from unqualified servicing workshops. The reason for this is that apart from the lack of accreditation, unqualified servicing workshops replace the vehicle’s refrigerant with M30, a hydrocarbon gas that causes both damage to the cooling system components, and is also highly flammable, posing a major fire risk.”

The cost of air conditioning regassing is based on the type of vehicle as well as the servicing workshop chosen. “While a regular car service will check for obvious tests and faults linked to the air conditioning system, a comprehensive air conditioning service is beneficial and recommended, ” says Lett.

Regular maintenance of the air conditioning system is important. 1. Go Easy on the Brake Pedal

A car doesn’t even need to come to the classic screaming halt seen in so many movie car chase scenes to wear out its tyres: going hard on the brakes is bad for any car and reduces tyre life. “Hard braking can trigger the ABS system unnecessarily, and each time there’s wear on that system its lifespan is shortened while tyres are subjected to greater demands,” Chris explains. “Regular hard braking is also bad for the drive shaft. Of course, when emergencies arise, drivers must step on the brakes as hard as they can, but a full-tilt driving style with lots of hard braking is to be avoided. Save it, and tyre rubber, for emergencies.”

2. Go Even Easier When Towing

Even those with a moderate driving style may need to adjust a little for towing. “There’s a lot of weight behind a vehicle when it’s towing,” says Chris. “It stands to reason that it will make overall momentum greater which makes for greater force when bringing the combination of car and trailer or caravan to a stop. Tyres bear the brunt of that, so take it easy when towing and try to anticipate situations in which it will be necessary to slow down or stop so that the brakes can be applied gently.”

3. Gentle in the Rough

Road surfaces make a difference, but every great adventure off the beaten track will involve at least some time spent driving on gravel or dirt roads. “When driving over corrugations, there is a temptation to go faster since the ride feels a little smoother, but the faster the vehicle goes, the greater the impact of surface debris on its tyres. There’s a big difference between hitting a stone in the road when taking it slowly compared to hitting it at speed. Once again, the tyres take the hammering.”

4. Adjust the Seat Correctly

If drivers are seated in an awkward driving position, they are likely to drive in a choppy way. “Always adjust the seat so that the driver’s wrists can rest on the steering wheel when the arms are extended forward,” advises Chris. “They will have better control over the car, and that means a safer, more comfortable ride and less chance of driving errors that can reduce the lifespan of the tyres.”

5. Turn the Wheel When the Car is Moving

Each time a driver turns the wheel of a stationary car, its tyres scrape across the road surface and lose a little more rubber. Sometimes, it’s absolutely necessary to do it when entering or leaving a tight parking space or pulling away into a sharp turn, but it’s better for the tyres to turn when the wheels are in motion. “It’s easy to develop bad driving habits over time, so watch out for this one,” says Chris. “It should be the exception and not the rule.”

With that piece of advice duly noted, it’s time to look at the fun and useful things that can be made with old tyres. “Do be careful,” says Chris “especially with projects that require cutting of tyres – they’re pretty tough, and a slip could result in a nasty accident. Use a heavy-duty drywall knife or utility knife to slice the rubber, and when encountering steel reinforcing wires, use a hacksaw.”

Old tyres have long been a standby for making playground equipment. From tyre obstacle courses to swings and jungle gyms, all it takes is some ingenuity, a few bright paint colours, some wooden poles, and a few fasteners. “Remember to make some holes for water drainage,” says Chris “and use strong fasteners so that there are no accidents.”

Whether it’s tyre play equipment made to swing, scramble, jump, or climb, most people will have fond memories of old tyre playgrounds. There are some super-creative ideas out there, so it’s possible to have plenty of fun deciding what to make. 

Hose Caddy

While making a hose caddy might not be as amusing as planning a full adventure playground, it’s a handy project that will save people from tripping over hose pipes in the yard. “A lot of people use old wheel rims as hose caddies,” says Chris, “but a hose pipe can be wound up inside an old tyre too. Just cut off the tyre’s sidewalls and add an optional layer of paint to pretty it up.”

Tyre Walls and Staircases

It’s possible to use old tyres in the same way as the blocks from which retaining walls are made, building staircases or walls depending on personal needs. “It is probably unwise to use tyre retaining walls on the steepest sites,” says Chris, “but they’re very good for stabilising slightly gentler slopes. When building staircases, DIYers may need some wood or steel droppers to help keep the tyres in place despite erosion and traffic, but they can be quite effective and look good.”

Pretty or Practical Planters

Most people will know that one can grow a good crop of potatoes in tyres, piling them up and filling in with soil as the potato plants grow for a bigger harvest. Paint the tyres and mount them on a garden wall, and an unusual and attractive vertical garden can be created.
