Australian tyre recycler and founder of Branigans Tyres, Chris Lett, explains the importance of the various types of tyres and the importance of maintaining them.

“A vehicle’s tyres are required to provide adequate traction and sufficient braking force to support the weight of the car,” says Lett, “and need to absorb road shocks and provide directional steering support”.

The tyre tread is important for the grip and traction of the vehicle. The tread pattern of the tyre is also important to consider as different treads are suited for different environments and reasons. Symmetric treads are also known as radials, that have the same pattern on their contact surface. They have lower rolling resistance and are more efficient.

Asymmetric tread have tread patterns on both the inside and outside of the tyre are different. “These features help dissipate water and provide a better cornering grip,” says Lett. Un-directional tread are tyres feature a V-shaped tread pattern which helps provide a better wet grip. They are also quieter while running.

Common problems to look out for when assessing the vehicles tyres: are worn out tyres. “Having worn or damaged tyres can increase the chances of getting into an accident,” says Lett. Aside from having a good grip, these factors also affect the safety of the vehicle.

If your tyres are damaged or worn after a collision with a curb or a pothole, it’s better to replace them now than to risk damaging them while driving.

It is important to “inspect the edges of the tyres for signs of tyre wear, the tyres may be under-inflated,” says Lett, “if the vehicles wheels are worn on one side of the road, this could imply that they need to be realigned”.

Having the proper tyre pressure is important for both safety and fuel efficiency. “It’s also important to check the tyres every few months to avoid a potential blowout,” says Lett. Having the tyre tread checked once a month is a must if it’s going to be worn unevenly. It can also help identify if the rubber is too worn to ignore.

When the pressure in the tyres is not ideal, there could be a leak or a puncture. Having a proper repair may help avoid these issues. If motorists notice that patches of unevenness or bald spots appear on the tyres, it is important that motorists have the shock absorbers and wheel balance checked.

READ: Nitrogen Versus Compressed Air: The Better Option for Tyres

Tyre wear is effected by three things: tyre classification, tread pattern and the application in which the tyre is used.

There are various ways tyres are constructed. While most cars now have tubeless tyres, some still have tube tyres. These are more durable and are usually less prone to puncture. “If motorists are in need of a new set of tyres, then tubeless is the way to go,” says Lett.

The Different compound mixes of rubber, silica, and carbon black can also help to improve the tyre’s longevity and performance. The weather also plays an important role in the condition of the tyres. Winter tyres are more durable and can stay in place in cold weather. “They feature a tread pattern that is designed to help keep the tyre supple,” says Lett.

Warm tyres, caused by the friction between the road and the tyre, generates heat and increases tyre temperature and air pressure. This provides an inaccurate measurement of the condition of the tyre.

If the tyres are overinflated, it affects the handling of the vehicle. Underinflated tyres, on the other hand, may cause the tyre to wear off prematurely. Either way, the incorrect inflation of the tyre negatively affects the wear and performance of the vehicle.

Signs of low tyre pressure also include vibrations. Excessive vibrations is an important indicator and warning sign of damaged tyres. This can be due to misalignment, unbalanced or bent wheels.

Less air in the tyre air chambers, may lead to “a bumpy ride and bumps and ridges can be easily felt,” says Lett.
RV Tyre Safety Tips

A Recreational Vehicle (RV) is a motor vehicle designed with living conditions and features for long-distance travel.

Long-distance travel puts a lot of stress on the tyres. An Australian tyre recycler and owner of Branigans Tyres, Chris Lett, provides RV safety tips that can reduce the chances of unexpected tyre issues on the long road.

Distribute load evenly

In order to manage the weight of the vehicle, all tyres should be the same size and the capacity of the load should not exceed the load trailer weight. To maintain the pressure of the tyre it is important to distribute the load in the RV evenly. It is essential to balance the load on the vehicle so that it is distributed evenly on the axles and each tyre. If the load is unevenly distributed, it may cause a tyre to burst.

Inspect tyres

“Before one leaves for the long road, it is important to conduct an inspection of the RV from a specialist, whether the tyre requires inflation, rotation or repairs,” says Lett. This quick errand or detour to your local Branigans Tyres workshop is beneficial to the safety of long-distance travellers. For instance, a tyre blowout can be avoided by simply taking the necessary precautions.

Most of these tyre warning signals are overlooked by drivers during a self-inspection, hence the importance of having an expert, such as a tyre specialist. A tyre specialist will advise on whether RV tyres are safe to travel with or if there are any adjustments, replacements or changes needed to be made.

RV tyres need to be checked for signs of uneven tyre wear, as this could signal an axle problem, and if this is not fixed, “it could lead to overheating in the tyres – just like any other tyre,” says Lett. The use of a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) can assist in alerting RV drivers of any tyre pressure problems, including the overheated tyres or if there are any signs that the tyre may be overheating.

RV drivers must keep in mind that RV tyres need to be rotated just as is done with any motor vehicle. This will ensure that the tyres wear evenly and also help extend the lifespan of the tyres.

At Branigans Tyres, “tyre rotations are done with ease and precision to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers,” says Lett.

Cover tyres

When tyres are exposed to the sun for long periods of time, the tyres dry out. Tyre specialists advise that RV “drivers should cover their tyres to avoid damage from UV-light,” says Lett. A good investment is getting RV tyre covers that will not only protect tyres from the heat of the sun but also provide protection in cold weather conditions. RV tyre covers will also help prevent premature cracking of the tyres.

Tyre specialists at Branigans Tyres, are available for all RV drivers who are ready to take on their next adventure. Drivers are urged to consult with tyre specialists for advice on how to get the maximum life out of their RV tyres.

Staying safe on the road means taking good care of a vehicle’s maintenance needs, and wheel alignment, says Chris Lett, owner of Branigans, a Burleigh Heads wheel and tyre workshop, is one of the big ones.

“Poor wheel alignment makes a vehicle harder to handle, and poor handling can cause accidents,” he explains.

Wheel alignment is simply a matter of ensuring that all the wheels work together because they’re all adjusted to the right angle in relation to the car. Apart from making driving pleasanter and safer, proper wheel alignment also helps to extend the lifespan of tyres.

Symptoms of Poor Wheel Alignment

An alert driver can quickly pick up the symptoms that indicate the need for correction of wheel alignment. According to Mr Lett, people will notice uncomfortable vibration when driving. And, because the wheels direct the trajectory of the car, they may find that they keep having to adjust the steering, even when they’re travelling on a completely straight stretch of road.

“If it’s very bad, they’ll feel like they’re fighting the vehicle all the time,” says Lett. “It keeps pulling to one side and it’s harder to keep the car from wandering off in its own direction.”

If a driver is still not sure, they can watch how the steering wheel behaves after cornering. The steering wheel should return to a central position after turning.

If someone has been driving with poor wheel alignment for some time, they’ll see the evidence on the tyres. Uneven tyre wear is a strong indication that they’ve already passed the time when wheel alignment should have been seen to.

Average Frequency for Wheel Alignment

With smooth driving on tarred roads, a car’s wheels may only need alignment every two to three years. But, warns Chris, one may need to have it seen to more frequently. A single nasty bump, such as the kind a driver gets when they hit a pothole or curbstone, could be enough to knock the wheels out of kilter. “Naturally, the same applies if your vehicle has experienced some kind of impact or accident, and if you’re driving on rough roads, you may even need to attend to wheel alignment in less than a year from the last time it was done.”

Branigans is fully equipped to attend to all its clients’ wheel and tyre related needs, and Mr Lett recommends enquiring about wheel alignment whenever they replace or repair a tyre. “Branigans staff will often notice signs of incorrect wheel alignment and alert motorists to the need for an adjustment,” he says. “Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt to ask.”

Attending to Wheel Alignment is a Cost-Saver

Apart from the fact that better handling could mean the difference between avoiding an accident and actually having one, there are plenty of cost-savings related to having the wheel alignment tweaked when necessary. To begin with, the tyres and suspension will last longer – and the vehicle will be more fuel-efficient. “You could lose around 7 percent in fuel efficiency if your wheels aren’t properly aligned,” says Lett.

All in all, it makes good sense to have a car’s wheel alignment checked, and the more often the car is driven, the further it’s driven, and the rougher driving conditions faced, the more frequently it should be done.

“Branigans is here to take care of its clients,” says Chris. “The team will be happy to show you why they think you should go for a wheel alignment. It’s not an overly pricey or time-consuming exercise, and the benefits far outweigh the costs.”

For further information, visit or call Chris and his team at Second Hand Tyres Gold Coast | Branigans Budget Tyres by contacting the Service Centres in Burleigh Heads (07) 5535 2660 or Southport (07) 5591 8633.

Preparing a car for a long road trip involves much more than just finding a way to squeeze the luggage into the boot – at least, if one wants to hit the road with maximum confidence. So says Chris Lett, owner of Branigans Tyres in Southport. “A breakdown far from home – or worse yet, in the middle of nowhere – can leave the driver feeling lost, frustrated and stressed out,” says Chris. “While there’s no guarantee that this won’t happen, you can reduce the chances of a breakdown and contribute towards a safer journey by preparing your car for the trip.”

From the Wheels Up

Start by inspecting the tyres. “Look at the tread depth across the entire width of the tyre,” says Chris. The treads should have a depth of at least 1.5mm. This means that the car is compliant with road safety legislation, it will have better stopping power, and a better chance of staying in control, even in slippery road conditions. Drivers should also check the sidewalls of tyres – any odd-looking bulges mean there is a risk of a blowout.

If there are signs of uneven tyre wear, the wheel balancing and alignment of the care are probably less than ideal. If the treads are still deep enough, Branigans Tyres can help by switching existing tyres around, rebalancing them, and checking the wheel alignment.

Battery Check, Belts, and Hoses

Chris is an experienced mechanic, so he doesn’t stop at the wheels and tyres his business specialises in. “Simply look under the bonnet and check your battery connections. They should be firmly attached with no signs of corrosion. If there is corrosion, the battery needs checking and cleaning. If you’re confident that you can do it yourself, go ahead. Alternatively, get help from a mechanic.”

“The belts and hoses should also be inspected to ensure that they aren’t worn. They’ll be working hard for you on your long road trip, so either check them out yourself, or get a trustworthy mechanic to take a look.”

Check the Car’s Fluids and Filters

Check the oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant levels. If the oil is starting to look dirty, consider having the car serviced before racking up hundreds of kilometres. That way, the driver can be assured that all the necessary filters have been attended to and that the car’s ready to go.

Even if the car is not taken for a full service, at the least the air filter should be checked out. If it isn’t clean, not only will more fuel will be used on the trip, but engine problems could be encountered along the way.

Check the Brakes

Apart from attending to tyres, Branigans is also happy to assist with brakes. “Being sure that the brakes aren’t worn before a long road trip is very important. Squeaks, squeals, and grinding noises are among the signs that the brakes need urgent attention, but there are more subtle signs too. For example, if the car tends to pull to one side when you stop suddenly, there’s cause for concern. You may feel vibration on the brake pedal, or it may seem softer than usual. Brake lights that come on for no apparent reason could also point towards an urgent need to attend to the brakes,” says Chris.

Look at the Lights

As a final, very straightforward road safety check before undertaking a long journey, get a family member to walk round the car while testing the indicators, brakes, and headlights. Apart from being in good working order, the covers should also be intact. “Your car won’t break down because your indicator light covers are cracked or broken, but you won’t be as safe on the road, and you could be in line for a hefty fine,” warns Chris.

Ready to Go: Branigans Wishes Drivers a Great Trip

With the pre-trip checklist complete, it’s a matter of packing the bags and enjoying the journey. “It’s up to you now,” says Chris. “Branigans Tyres wishes you a safe journey to your destination and wonderful welcome when you return home.”

For further information, visit or call Chris and his team at Second Hand Tyres Gold Coast |Branigans Budget Tyres by contacting the Service Centres in Burleigh Heads (07) 5535 2660 or Southport (07) 5591 8633.

One of the most overlooked causes of vehicle accidents and poor vehicle performance, is faulty tyres, says Australian veteran tyre recycling expert Chris Lett. He emphasises the importance of regularly inspecting and maintaining your tyres, and the importance of checking their health before navigating the roads, especially if the car’s been standing for long periods without use.

Lett says the list of dangers attached to driving with old or damaged tyres, incorrect pressure and worn tread, is long, especially if the road is unsurfaced, wet, icy, or pitted with potholes. Any of these can call for longer braking distances and raise the chances of skidding, as well as resulting in a tyre blowout, poor vehicle performance, and the danger of injury or death for you, your passengers and others on the road.

“Any of these situations can cause immediate loss of control of the vehicle, potentially causing it to veer or roll. In this situation, you should not use your brakes to stop the vehicle, but rather use the gears to slow it down,” Lett says.

Preventing the Unthinkable

To avoid finding yourself in a dire situation, Lett said it is vital to become aware of anything unusual in the car’s performance while on the road, such as unusual vibrations or sounds while driving, as this could be a sign you have a problem with your tyres. It is also necessary to check tyres regularly, and pay close attention in the process. A quick glance, or kicking the tyre, is not sufficient.

“Very important is to regularly check the rims, treads and tyres. Make sure nothing is wedged into the tread or rubber, and check that the sides of the tyres are free from cracks, splits or cuts, or any strange bulges and bumps,” Lett says.

Tyre Maintenance, the Do’s and Don’ts

Wash your tyres regularly with soap and water, cleaning off any road debris and chemicals that may degrade the tyre, check all valve caps are present and bolts correctly tightened, and look out for any signs of uneven wear or bald spots.

Check the pressure of your tyres once a month when the tyres are cold for better accuracy. The tyre specs for your vehicle can be found in the vehicle manual or on the label on the inside of the driver’s door. These specs will give you the correct pressure for the tyre size and speed/load ratings for your vehicle.

Look out for lumps, bumps and tears: Situations such as hitting a pothole or obstacle in the road can cause wheel alignment to go out of balance and cause internal damage to the tyre. Squealing tyres, the car pulling to one side when driving straight, and uneven tyre wear, are all signs of damage.

Keep an Eye on the tread: Check the tread on all your tyres regularly. A tyre has markers called TWI (Tread Wear Indicators) which are placed evenly in the main grooves in the tyre tread. These give a visual indication of how much tread is left on your tyre. If they are worn down to the level of the TWS, it is time to replace the tyre. Another method is to use a tyre tread depth gauge.

Balancing, Wheel Alignment and Rotation: Lett recommends visiting a tyre specialist at least every 10,000 km to check wheel balance and alignment, and rotating your tyres in order to ensure the long life and health of the tyres.

Replacing tyres

Many people may take a chance on delaying tyre replacement because they can’t afford to purchase new ones. This is where good quality recycled tyres come in at a fraction of the cost. Lett stresses the importance of ensuring recycled tyres have been tested and graded by a reputable dealer, who will provide you with safe tyres with a good few years of use still left in them.

Lett’s Branigans Tyres in Burleigh Heads and Southport stocks well-known brand names such as Continental, Avon, Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop, Firestone and Goodyear. All recycled tyres are thoroughly checked and graded for age, tread and projected functional life-span before being sold to customers at budget prices.

Checking a car’s tyre pressure regularly is important. With a busy lifestyle it’s so easy to overlook. But considering the major impact incorrect tyre pressure has on your car’s performance, its safety, and how long it will be fit for use on the road, it’s certainly worth getting into the habit of checking pressure levels regularly. According to tyre experts like iconic Australian tyre recycler Chris Lett of Branigans Tyres in Queensland, doing so monthly (at the very least) could save lives and make sure you don’t have to replace tyres too soon.

Why Tyre Pressure is So Important

Many may believe the tyres are what supports the weight of the car and its load, but it’s really the air inside them that does the heavy lifting. With the correct tyre pressure, the weight of the car is spread evenly over the tyre’s tread, stabilising both the tyres and the car by providing the optimal amount of contact with the road for the best grip. When tyres are either over-inflated or under-inflated, that stability is negatively affected, and the car becomes harder to handle, Lett said.

Determining if tyres are at the right pressure can’t be done with a quick glance as you climb into the car, or by kicking the tyre to see if it’s “flat”. That requires a proper test at home using a pressure gauge, or by stopping at the local service station for a check.

However, there are some warning signs that it’s time for those tests. These include the car’s performance seeming sluggish, the ride being not as smooth and comfortable as usual, and the occasional bump as the car battles to deal with stones, potholes and roughness on the road it would normally deal with easily, Lett said.

And that’s just the beginning, according to Lett. Incorrect inflation can lead to far worse situations. These start when it affects the ability to keep control while braking, stopping, or going round corners. This can lead to accidents and collisions, and bad ones at that. Tyre defects and failures, including incorrect tyre pressure, are listed among the top factors playing a part in fatal collisions.

Consequences of Incorrect Tyre Pressure

Tyres change shape when either under-inflated or over-inflated. If there’s too much air inside the tyre (overinflated), the normally flat tread area, distorted by the pressure, can become curved with a bulge in the centre part of the tread. Road contact is reduced to one narrow strip of tyre surface. This increases the strain on the tyre, causes more difficulty with handling, provides a bumpier ride, and leads to uneven tread wear, which could lead to blowouts, and will definitely shorten the tyre’s lifespan.

When tyres are under-inflated, the opposite happens. Instead of bulging out, the tyre tends to collapse inwards because of too little air, Lett said. The tyre loses its round shape and firmness and the contact area with the road expands and flattens, increasing the rolling resistance and so making it harder for the engine to turn the wheel. The resulting increase in energy usage can increase fuel consumption by about 1.5% when the tyres are as little as 0.3bar under the level listed on the sticker inside the car door. There will also be tyre damage, particularly on the edges, and braking performance will be affected.

Whether they are over-inflated or under-inflated, tyres are not going to last as long as they should. And, according to Lett, the shortfall could be as much as 7500km.

What affects your tyre pressure?

A number of things affect tyre pressure, the most obvious being if the pressure is not checked for a lengthy period, says Chris Lett. During that time, the pressure may decrease by as much as 1 or 2psi per month.

Air temperature both inside and outside the tyres also plays a big part, with the pressure rising with heat and lessening along with temperature drops. Ambient (outside) air temperature can cause the pressure to rise or fall by 1psi for every 5 degree temperature change, while tyre heat generated by friction can cause the tyre pressure to rise, especially when speeding.

For Lett, owner of Branigans Tyres in Queensland for more than 15 years, has spent these years helping motorists with high quality, low mileage secondhand tyres at budget prices so he’ll be there for you if your tyres lives are shortened by tyre pressure problems.

Very few people would risk hiking up a steep hill wearing boots with worn-out soles. They would know it wasn’t safe, as they would probably slip. Yet the same doesn’t apply to their car’s “boots” when hitting the road, says iconic Gold Coast tyre expert and recycler, Chris Lett. Many drivers still take to the road with tyre tread less than the legal minimum, and appear to be totally unaware that what they are doing is both illegal and dangerous.

He said surveys suggest that every second Australian has no idea of the country’s tyre safety rules, and that implies they don’t realise that worn-out tyres, often allowed to degrade to that point because of drivers’ reluctance to meet the high costs of buying news ones, can cost them dearly in fines, as well as endanger them, their passengers and others on the road.

Possible Consequences of Worn Tyres

Lett says worn tyres can have serious consequences. Like the hiker’s boots with thin and smooth soles, tyres with poor tread lessen the car’s contact with the road and therefore its grip, particularly if the road is wet. Not only are smooth tyres less able to disperse the water, but their inability to keep contact with the road can result in sliding or aquaplaning.

This results in drivers losing control of the car, particularly when driving at high speed, and rolling it, swerving into oncoming cars, or finding it hard to stop fast enough to prevent a collision.

Rules of the Road: Tread Carefully

Roadworthy tread depth is controlled by the Australian Motor Vehicles Standards Act of 1989, and different penalties are issued for tyres with less tread than the regulated minimum. The penalties differ in different states and can take the form of defect notices or demerit points on drivers’ licenses, but all will also include fines based on how many tyres are no longer roadworthy.

Tread depths are about 6-8mm when the tyres are new, but deteriorate with usage. Once the tread has thinned to 1.6mm across the width of the tyre, they are no longer considered safe or roadworthy, and therefore are illegal. However, according to Lett, owners should rather replace them when they reach 3mm, a tread depth that is considerably safer.

Because lack of tread reduces the car’s contact with the road, Let says it impacts on the car’s braking system making it more difficult to stop quickly. While the brakes themselves slow the rotation of the wheels, its left to the tyres to disperse any moisture on the road and bring the car to a halt using the friction between the rubber and the road. However, smooth tyres can’t perform either function properly, and stopping becomes a longer process both in terms of time and distance.

On a wet road, the difference in braking distance between tyres with the regulated minimum 1.6mm and ones with 3mm treads can be as much as 44 %, or just over 9 meters. And Lett says that could well be 9 meters too far to prevent an accident.

How to Check Tyre Tread

The tread depth can be determined from the levels of tread bar indicators built into modern tyres. They run across the width of the tyre and are seen lodged at the bottom of the grooves when the tyre is new. As the tyre wears they are increasingly visible, and the gap between them and the tyre surface shrinks. Once they are close to, or level with, the surface, it’s time for a change.

Lett says other ways to test the tread involve using a tyre gauge or ruler, or playing with coins. Inserting an Australian 10c into the central groove, and seeing the outside rim disappear shows the tyres meet the 1.6mm legal minimum, but if the bill of the platypus on a 20c coin shows above the top of the tyres, the tread is a safer 3mm.

Australian statistics put low-tread tyres right up there with speed and alcohol as major causes of fatal accidents. Should the huge numbers of smooth tyres on the road it prove to be because of the driver’s reluctance or inability to pay the price of new tyres, Lett says it would be both tragic, and unnecessary.

Lett said Branigans Tyres in Burleigh Heads, which he’s run for 15 years, provides thoroughly checked high quality recycled tyres, many of which have done low mileage and have good tread at a fraction of the price of new tyres.

For Australians trapped at home by the threat of Covid-19, it might seem like hitting the long road again is nothing more than a dream. But the time will come when the lockdowns are over and the great outdoors beckons again, says iconic tyre expert and recycler Chris Lett of Branigans Tyres on the Gold Coast. He suggests that Aussies make sure they are ready to roll when travel restrictions for local travel are lifted.

He believes that once Australians can again open the front door wide, they won’t be hanging around at home as they will have been there and done that for too long. The outdoors and travel are part of their culture and they will be firing up the camper or packing the car and heading into the golden sunset (or sunrise) as soon as possible.

However, Lett stresses the importance of drivers checking their cars and tyres for any damage caused by the lockdown period of little or no mobility, and they should do this before turning on the ignition.

What to Watch Out for When Back On the Road

The roads and highways are going to be busy: Lett says there’s a good chance the country is going to have a boom in local travel as Australians set about making up for the loss of the traditional Easter holiday break. Overseas trips are probably an option for some time, so Aussies wanting to feel the wind in their hair and the sun on their faces will be celebrating by taking a new look at Australia.

Getting your tyres ready to spin: Long periods are standing idle aren’t kind to most parts of your car, but the battery and tyres are among the first to suffer. If the car is left out in the open without a cover, UV light, ozone and the heat of the sun can cause tyre degradation, Lett said.

Tyres can also lose their shape if the wheels don’t move fairly regularly. This causes the car’s weight to be on the same section of the tyre for as long as the car stands idle. Failure to ensure the tyre pressure was kept at the right level all the time could have similar results and both these problems could call for replacement tyres, according to Lett.

Getting Ready to Roll: All temporary fixes will need to be undone, like removing any plugs inserted in the exhaust and air vents to prevent rats and insects from make themselves at home in the car. Batteries will need charging, water levels could do with a check, and the oil and fuel may need attention if the car has stood for a long time.

Lett said it’s worth spending that little bit longer at home dealing with these issues than having to face mechanical faults and the consequences of damaged and unsafe tyres while away from home.

Should you need replacement tyres after lockdown ,Lett’s Branigans Tyres in Queensland has high quality secondhand tyres, some of which have hardly been used and cost less than half the price of new ones.

We all know Covid-19 lockdowns lead to stress, boredom and cabin fever because we can’t get out and about freely. The stay-at-home concept adopted to fight the Covid-19 pandemic can have much the same effect...

We all know Covid-19 lockdowns lead to stress, boredom and cabin fever because we can’t get out and about freely. The stay-at-home concept adopted to fight the Covid-19 pandemic can have much the same effect on car tyres, according to Legend Australian tyre recycler Chris Lett.

“Cars, and their tyres, don’t respond well to being parked in one place for too long, any more than people do. And like them, they need some exercise or at least some special care to keep healthy. And that applies whether they are grounded during a lockdown or just stuck there because the driver’s away for a long period,” Lett said.

Where (And Where Not) to Store Your Car

He says that during lockdown it is quite likely that the car, and certainly its tyres, are far from the first thing on the minds of stay-at-home car owners, many of whom are on furlough, working from home, or have lost their jobs as businesses fail due to the economic effects of Covid-19.

“They are probably far more concerned about having food on the table than they are about tyre problems which could occur if their car is left parked in one place for weeks on end. But it could cost them dearly when the lockdowns are over, and they find they have to replace their tyres. Taking care of the tyres could help relieve boredom, and their shrinking wallets, at the same time,” Lett said.

Best Options for Preserving Tyres

According to Lett, the best place for an idle car and its tyres is lifted off the ground in a ventilated garage. Using axle stands, a car lift, or foam rubber trainers, will help stop flat spots forming on the tyres.

However, it also occurs simply with the passage of time when the car stands idle for an extended period.

Lett’s advice is to over-inflate the tyres slightly (about 15PSI over standard) when the car is not going to be used for a long period, and then lower it to normal levels before putting it back on the road.

This would leave the tyres vulnerable to exposure to heat, ozone and UV light, all of which can damage the rubber and cause dry rot, leading to fine cracks on the sidewalls.
Leaving the tyres dirty is another no-no, according to Lett.

Most Australians are aware that their beloved homeland is not always kind, and the going on the long roads can get kind of tough, hot and sticky on occasion. For one thing, the country’s climate is mostly hot and humid, as a large part of it lies in the high tropical climate belt. This can spoil the trip for the driver, and, according to Queensland tyre expert and recycler, Chris Lett, it can also increase the risks faced by Australian drivers when it comes to their cars’ tyres.

Heat Takes its Toll on Tyres

Lett says that when faced with consistently high temperatures, rubber tyres tend to melt and lose their shape. Driving frequently in high temperatures on hot roads and at high speed is also the perfect recipe for an increase in tyre pressure, which causes tyres to deteriorate more quickly. This can, in turn, affect the the driver’s safety, and that of others on the road. It may also shorten the lifespan and lessen the mileage drivers expect to get out of their tyres, and leave them faced with replacing them a lot earlier than expected.

On Queensland’s Gold Coast, where Chris Lett’s Branigans recycled tyre outlet is situated, motorists fortunately find themselves in the slightly milder sub-tropical coastal zone. However, even there the average daily temperatures in summer can still peak at around 30°C, or even slightly higher. Lett says that this heat, and the accompanying humidity, definitely impact on how long local drivers’ car tyres are likely to last before needing to be replaced.

Lett says dealing with this calls for more careful selection when choosing replacement tyres. It’s important to choose those which will suit the climate, and other conditions on the long roads linking the different widespread cities in Australia. In most parts of Australia, heavily built tyres made of multiple layers of a tough material are the best choice for longer functional road time.

Cutting the Costs of the Right Tyres

While these tyres may seem to be a costly investment, Lett says they will, if properly cared for, justify the extra expense by lasting longer. These tyres are made to suit the road conditions and the humid weather conditions in Australia and have manufacturers warranties ranging from 5 to 10 years.

And the cost needn’t be a problem if obtained at a reputable recycled tyre outlets, where the price-tag of these tyres produced by major tyre companies such as Bridgestone, Dunlop, Michelin, and Good Year, is likely to be less than half that paid for new ones, while still allowing for a lengthy period of safe functionality.

He added that the used tyres sold by Branigans in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast were mostly gathered following car accidents in which the tyres were not damaged, and careful checks were carried out to make sure they were fit for the road. Many have not covered many miles, so they are likely to last for nearly the same amount of time as they would have, had they been bought brand new.

Failing to maintain your car tyres can be seen as a four-fold crime. It’s operating against the law, putting your safety in jeopardy, and affecting your car’s performance, according to Australian tyre expert, Chris Lett. And it’s also cutting short the lifespan of the tyres, which is going to steal from your family budget, even if you save a good deal of money by buying recycled tyres from a safe outlet like Branigans in Queensland.

Keeping Tyres Clean of Debris

Lett said that while consistent tyre pressure, wheel alignment, balancing and rotation, as well as limiting exposure to the elements, are at the top of the list when it comes to tyre maintenance, many people are unaware of, or pay little attention to another possible villain in the fight against tyre degradation – dirt and road debris that can shorten tyre life.

He said that when washing the car and checking out its condition, many car owners don’t think to shift their focus below the car’s body and take a close look at the tyres. This stops them from seeing the early warning signs of the onset of damage to tyres, and taking the necessary steps to avoid trouble down the line and the destruction it can cause.

And it’s even less often, Lett said, that motorists realise the importance of washing the tyres thoroughly with soap and water regularly when they routinely clean the car. Yet, this can help prevent some of the almost certain damage that can follow when dust and dirt is left on the rubber, and so lengthen the lifespan of the tyres.

More Than Just a Hose-off

Lett said he’s not just suggesting a quick hose-off when arriving home after a long trip down one of Australia’s many unpaved roads, which is often done for aesthetic reasons. That’s because a light splash of water may not be enough to remove the more stubborn dirt and unknown substances kicked up from any road surface. And if it fails to do so, the road debris which remains on the tyres can easily lead to damage and degradation.

Road Debris Hold Hidden Dangers for Tyres

Without even taking into account the sharp items like nails, broken glass and other solid materials which can lead to obvious damage in the form of punctures, and blow-outs, the road can hold, and then release, other less visible threats to tyres which are not as easy to identify, according to the Burleigh Heads recycled tyre expert.

“The road is full of other materials and particles such as dust, dirt, bits of asphalt, pebbles, seeds, leaves and the aftermath of chemical spills. Many of these less obvious, and sometimes almost invisible, items can be on your tyres after a drive, and can start to eat away at the rubber,” Lett said.

Lett’s Branigans Budget Tyres outlet centres around the sale of high quality recycled tyres at budget prices. These have been checked vigilantly for every sign of degradation or damage, which Lett says can manifest themselves in various ways, from cracks on the side-wall of the tyre to broken, damaged or worn-down tread. And while not all tyre damage can be attributed to failure to keep them clean, a certain amount of the tyres degradation could certainly be attached to the road surfaces the car was driven on.

With new car tyre prices rising constantly, many drivers are risking their cars and their lives by continuing to drive on old and dangerous ones until they can afford to buy new ones, according to...

With new car tyre prices rising constantly, many drivers are risking their cars and their lives by continuing to drive on old and dangerous ones until they can afford to buy new ones, according to veteran Queensland tyre recycler Chris Lett. Instead, he says, they can save money and remain safe by buying good quality second-hand tyres at budget prices which are still entirely safe to use on the Australian roads for another few years.

Lett challenges the stigma often attached to using second-hand tyres as replacements for those which have aged or deteriorated. He claims this is a generalisation that does not apply to all second-hand tyres or dealers, and usually is based on a bad choice of both tyres and outlets, something which can happen when buying either new or second-hand tyres. Potential buyers should be careful in both instances to buy the right tyres for their vehicle, and to get them from the right source.

Keeping the Wheels Turning

According to Chris, some used tyres which are available for a second period of service still have as much as 80 to 90% of their tread on them, making them legal, and fit for many more miles on the road.

“Tread isn’t the only criterion to take into account when determining tyre life. But it certainly is one of the most important safety features when it comes to grip in extreme situations on the road, and poor tread is also the most likely to get you into trouble with traffic police if it is worn beyond a certain level,” he said.

Other factors like the previous owner’s driving habits, failure to check the inflation, rotate tyres when necessary, and avoid leaving the vehicle undriven, or parked outside, in the same place or for too long, can also give rise to damage like dry rot and other deterioration.

However, recently made second-hand tyres which have not accrued much mileage, and still had good tread, could well provide three or four years of safe driving, compared to their estimated life of about 5 or 6 years when new.

Recycled Tyres Have to Be Checked and Graded

Finding the right recycled tyre depends on both the make of the tyre, its match with the car, and the company selling it, according to Chris Lett.

“All the tyres sold at Branigan’s Tyres in Burleigh Head and Southport are primarily sourced from suppliers who build up stock following car wrecks. In many instances, these tyres carry well-known and respected brand names such as Avon, Bridgestone, Continental, Michelin, Dunlop, Firestone and Goodyear, and have hardly been used.”

Make Sure Used Tyres Are Tested and Graded

These are carefully checked and graded for age, tread and projected functional life-span before being sold to customers at budget prices which amount to only a small percentage of what is charged by new tyre outlets for the same tyres when sold as brand new.

According to Lett, this more than compensates for the slight reduction in their expected life, and has the added advantage of providing savings that will probably cover the cost of another set of recycled tyres when the time comes to discard them.

Around the world, efforts are being made to take on the huge problems caused by dumping end-of-life tyres with recycling efforts. And the piles of thousands of used car tyres are growing a little smaller....

Around the world, efforts are being made to take on the huge problems caused by dumping end-of-life tyres with recycling efforts. And the piles of thousands of used car tyres are growing a little smaller. However Australian tyre expert Chris Lett claims that a good way to cut down the number of dumped tyres would be to avoid disposal of tyres that have not yet reached the end of their road and are still safe and functional. And the owner of veteran Burleigh Heads and Southport tyre company Branigans says this can safely be done with controlled re-sale of still functional tyres.

End of Life Tyre Dumping Has Caused Chaos

As it stands, Lett says an estimated 1.5 billion used vehicle tyres are discarded globally every year. Around 50 million of them are in Australia. These have created havoc and hazards at landfills as a result of the threat some of their components pose to the environment, their size, and their resilience. This chaos has lead to many countries and US states slapping a ban on their being disposed of at landfills and led to calls for recycling instead.

Lett views himself as a recycler. But unlike other recyclers currently seeking ways to re-use the rubber in the production of new tyres, burn them to derive fuel for use chiefly in cement manufacture, and to determine its suitability as an alternative material for roads, Chris Lett has for the past 15 years chosen his own brand of recycling. This takes the form of reselling slightly-used premium tyres for far less than their original cost.

Call to Cut Back on Unnecessary Dumping

“Dumping tyres which are still perfectly good for further use is adding to the waste disposal problem, and is contrary to general efforts to counteract the environmental impact of waste,” Lett said. “Tyres do eventually degrade in a landfill after a period of 50 to 80 years. But during that period their bulk, resilience and the fire risk they create, make them strong threats.”

He said trying to deal with the situation by making it illegal to dump tyres at landfills, is not an ideal solution. Instead it has created a scenario in which tyres are now simply being dumped on the side of the road or in remote areas. This lessened the tyre disposal load on controlled landfills by shifting it elsewhere to areas which are not controlled by waste management.

Why Throw Away Good Tyres?

Chris Lett, who has been in the tyre industry for about 15 years, said buying recycled used tyres did have its problems, as was the case with any second-hand deal. But provided the buyer uses only established outlets like Branigans which have solid reputations and which test and grade tyres carefully, these tyres should be serviceable for a few years.

Here at Branigans Budget Tyres, we offer a comprehensive roadworthiness check for your tyres on the Gold Coast.

Making sure your tyres are roadworthy is a must for many reasons, the most important being safety, for yourself and other road users.

Then there is cost. Partly worn, damaged or incorrectly inflated tyres can impact driving efficiency by increasing fuel consumption and risking damage to your suspension.

Basic Checks

There are some simple ways to check that your tyres comply with Queensland road safety laws.

As well as the safety and cost elements, driving on worn tyres is illegal, so you need to know that Australian authorities have the right to stop you and check your tyres at any time.

If you’re slightly unsure about what you need to look for, pop into Branigans Budget Tyres and we’ll talk you through your tyre requirements.

The first thing to do is to check your tyres are inflated to the right pressure. If you have your user’s manual, this will include the right tyre pressure.

Plus, the amount will be moulded into the tyre wall itself – however if your tyres are particularly worn, this may be harder to determine.

The family team at Branigans Budget Tyres has been selling tyres on the Gold Coast for more than 15 years, so we are highly qualified to identify the correct tyre in seconds then inflate your tyres accordingly.

Once we have your wheels off, we will check for signs of wear on each tyre. It is usually the case that tyres wear out at different rates depending where they are on your vehicle.

Generally speaking, the tyres that deliver your engine’s power to the road wear out quickest.

Many vehicles are 2WD, with some kicking into all-wheel-drive in difficult conditions so unless your vehicle is a rear-wheel-driven these are likely to be your 2 front tyres.

We may then be able to rotate your tyres so that the more worn ones go on the rear axles. This should be done every six months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

Further Help

At Branigans, we will check for wear on your tyres, which indicates your wheels need realigning.

This will produce more wear on one side of your tyre than the other, which can be dangerous if not remedied quickly.

In the case of irregular wear, as well as rotating your tyres, we will be able to realign your wheels so they turn evenly, spreading the weight of your vehicle across the full width of the tyre on the road.

If you are noticing any wobble in either your steering or one or more of your wheels themselves, especially at speed, your wheels could need rebalancing.

Poorly balanced wheels wear your tyres unevenly, however we can easily fix this problem for you.

We will advise you if you need replacement tyres and offer great value new and DOT-standard used tyres on the Gold Coast. We give an honest assessment and stock high quality tyres at very reasonable prices.
