As the year comes to a close, families are preparing to hit the roads and bask in the holiday season fun. With the open road ahead, it is paramount that road users anticipate the unexpected while on the roads. A brief, yet comprehensive tyre inspection will definitely be of assistance and could prevent on-road interruptions.

“Preparing for a road trip provides a great level of excitement and fun,” says Chris Lett, Australian tyre recycler, and owner of Branigans Tyres. “Road users should undertake a good vehicle check-up well before the trip,” Lett adds. Follow his tips below to ensure you are holiday ready!

Check the state of your tyres. The tyre experts at Branigans Tyres Burleigh Heads or Southport branches are always happy to assist you and ensure your tyres are in A1 condition. To be legal, the tyre tread depth should be a minimum of 1.6mm. Tyre pressure should be checked and meet the requirements of the vehicle’s manufacturer.

Check the state of your spare tyre and ensure it is also in good condition and not showing signs of wear and tear. Also check that you have the necessary tools to change a tyre should you find yourself in that position.

Tyre rotations should also be done before trips to attain more uniform wear on the tyres and extend the life of them. Most manufacturers recommend tyre rotation at approximately every 8,000 – 13,000 kilometres. However, if you identify uneven wear, imbalance or misalignment on one or more of the tyres before the recommended kilometerage, ensure you undertake a tyre rotation as soon as possible.

Chris Lett adds a few other tips to ensure you are ready for that holiday trip. “Don’t overload the car, check the load capacity of your vehicle. Understanding the vehicle’s maximum load capacity is important. It is fun to pack everything desired to make the holidays a memorable experience, but keep in mind that for every 90kg of additional weight, fuel economy can be reduced by 0.42 km per litre. This can drastically affect the life span of the vehicle’s tyres. Pack only what is needed, and anything excessive will have to be left at home,” says Lett.

Lastly, never drive while tired, and take regular rest breaks on long journeys,” says Lett.  “Keep a bottle of water and a couple of snacks handy to ensure you are not dehydrated or hungry while driving. There are lots of roadside rest areas in all Australian states, and often free refreshments are offered, especially in the holiday season,” adds Lett.
