Solid carpet maintenance (cleaning tips to keep carpets clean and durable)
Carpet maintenance is an important aspect of regular house care and cleaning, yet many tend to neglect this key priority. Carpets regularly suffer from wear and tear, including spills, dirty shoes, and carpet snags, and should be maintained to keep them looking fresh.
Elijah Chique, owner of Express Carpet Repairs, and an expert third generation carpet repairer, provides homeowners with straightforward carpet maintenance tips to keep carpets clean and last longer.
“Carpet care is easy when the right tools are used. A vacuum cleaner, a sharp pair of scissors, and an effective stain remover will help restore carpets to their beauty,” says Chique. “Carpets in general, are designed to last for many years, but for that, regular maintenance must be done. Here are a few important cleaning tips to ensure quality maintenance,” he adds.
Vacuum carpets every week: “Vacuum the carpets at least once a week. This prevents all kinds of dirt from building up. Where there is a lot of foot traffic and activity, then the space may need to be vacuumed more often,” says Chique. Dirt can be embedded so thoroughness is important,” he adds.
Cut pulled threads/snags: Pulling snags out of the carpet can make things worse, and can leave some unsightly damage to carpets. “Rather, use a sharp pair of scissors and cut all outstanding snags to even out the carpet fibres. This will provide carpets with a more uniform look,” says Chique.
Clean carpet spills: When something is spilt on the carpet the longer it is left the worse it will become and the harder it will be to remove. “Blotting or scooping as much of the spill is crucial here. After that, add a small amount of water and blot with a clean towel,” says Chique. “If needed, use a quality stain remover that’s approved for carpet use. Do not attempt to scrub the fibres as they will leave a carpet mark that can also become visible in the future,” Chique adds.
Attend to furniture dents: Furniture dents are a common issue with carpets, and can leave noticeable marks when moved around. There is one budget friendly solution, says Chique. “Get some boiling water and pour it in the indent, let it sit for a few seconds, then you’ll need something flat and sturdy you can scrap along the carpet to push out the water and flatten the area, like a spatula. After scraping the spot, using your flat object, with a quick motion, flick out the water so it doesn’t all soak in one area. Make sure to be careful if it’s a loop pile carpet that whatever your using isn’t too thin, or fine on the end because it may grab onto one of the threads and tear it. This process can be repeated if the indent is still noticeable. Alternatively, if the denting isn’t that bad, a bit of time is usually all that’s needed, they’ll flatten on their own.” “If the carpet is older, and the furniture has not been moved in over a decade, then carpet fibres are possibly damaged and dents could be permanent,” says Chique.
